just a few things i'm chewing on and throwing out to be chewed on, i guess. each of them merits an entire essay (except for the last one) so i'm not elaborating unless people want me to. -chews lip-
standard disclaimers: MY OPINIONS, NOT THE TRUTH. feel free to argue with me. i have 'argumentation in olympics' as one of my interests, ffs.
so:
1. hibari isn't a free spirit
2. he realizes this, at least in tyl
3. hibari isn't emotionally damaged
4. yamamoto isn't oblivious
5. chrome in tyl is the zen mistress
6. kyouya is supposed to head the ohtori police as third son but he wants to be more
7. tamaki isn't an airhead
8. nor is he naive
9. reborn is ohtori kyouya, twenty years later

Which is why I admire his attitude.
Does 9 mean Kyouya is reborn 20 years later? Not sure what you mean by the last one.

And mm yes, precisely. There are very few authors that I will actually read Tamaki, because Tamaki is extraordinarily perceptive. He understands a lot abobut how the world works. The thing is, I see him as being deliberately oblivious more than anything else. It might even be a subconscious thing, but he is purposely blocking out certain things that might break the illusions of what he believes will make every happy - i.e. if he sees Haruhi (oh my god I typed Hibari wtf self) as a potential girlfriend rather than his daughter, it will break the illusion of the Host Club family. And family is something he wants desperately enough to continue fooling himself. Plus, he believes that the status quo makes everyone happy - hence he shouldn't break it.
... basically.

It's sweet and sad that Tamaki cares so much about family. I can sort of relate to his feelings a little myself. When I think of "psychologically damaged" characters in Ouran, Kyouya and the twins come to mind right away. But Tamaki's had problems in his life too, except he deals with it in such a different way. Kyouya used to be really bitter about his situation, but Tamaki still tries to see the world in an idealistic light. When you think about it, Tamaki didn't have any friends before the Host Club... so I'm beginning to see this complex side of him. I think the scene where he talks about playing games with his friends in Vol. 3 is just adorable. I thought he was annoying before that, but now I love him. I just think it makes so much more sense for him to end up with Kyouya.... So Kaoru figured out what Tamaki was trying to do, but I'm sure everyone else knew as well. Hunny is another character whose complexities aren't really shown enough. And of course, the lack of Mori backstory and info is disappointing. There's so much Hatori could have shown with the Host Club, and yet her focus seems to be on romance lately... Which isn't bad, but I like learning about all the members.
I ordered Volume 11 today, so I'm psyched for the sports festival arc. Sexy!Kyouya time, go!

I, however, one hundred million percent agree with 1, 3 and 4. And 9, but we have discussed that. ^^;

WEE~ <3
Mmmrrr I've spent nearly hours trying to convince someone that Hibari isn't a free spirit and they still don't understand. I give up.

But if he were to ever realize even for a moment that the only world under him is the one made of earth, he wouldn't be able to stand it.

He's an Enforcer. I compare him a lot to a predator, an Emperor, an alpha because of that aching need to dominate. He doesn't let anyone restrict him, hold him back because those are signs of other people have authority over him. The dominating ego in him won't ever allow that. He follows his own rules, his own organization, his own entire world.
Even if it's one that's slightly deluded. xD

And, to clarify what you brought up in AIM, that uh, the last two sentences of what I said supports him being free than not:
No it's not that he's free, it's more that he refuses to bow down to any authority but himself. Freedom connotes a lack of authority. But Hibari wants to be the sole authority over everything, especially himself and his environment. His willpower is extraordinary, after all.
And that's all. -stops babbling-
