[FIC] Ouran: Lacking Definition

I meant for this to be entirely gen, honest. But then it seems like my Kyouya-muse... -facepalms-

At least it's only implied.

Also! Barely scraped the word count! Editing this was harder than writing it.

Lacking Definition

Characters/Pairings: Kyouya, Tamaki, implied Tamaki/Kyouya
Rating: G
Words: 500
Summary: For the [livejournal.com profile] ouran_contest prompt ‘Impending Doom’, where it won second prize. “What, Kyouya wonders, is the use of a protector who no longer had anything to protect?”

Protector
1. One who protects; a guardian.

What, Kyouya wonders, is the use of a protector who no longer has anything to protect?

He leans back against his chair and turns his head to watch his fellow club members, smiling thoughtfully.

A protector is defined by the very person whom he protects. If there is no one that needs protecting, then there is no need for a protector. And all things eventually stopped needing protection, because he either grows obsolete...

Or he grows up.

Kyouya taps the pen against his lip and watches Tamaki.

Since Tamaki has entered his life, Kyouya knows that he has to protect him. Tamaki is innocent. Without Kyouya, the Host Club would have sunk after its first day because of Tamaki's own naiveté and excesses. Tamaki doesn't have a single ounce of business sense in his body - all he wants to do is to make people happy, and the easiest way he can think of is to lavish them with free compliments and expensive gifts. Both have the same meaning to him.

But Kyouya knows differently. Kyouya has always been logical and practical, with his feet planted so firmly to the ground that he can't even think about jumping to get what he wants. But Tamaki taught him how to spread his wings and fly; to shake off the self-made restrains he has been carrying since birth. Without Tamaki, Kyouya would still have been trapped in his position as third son, suffocating himself.

It is only fair that he helps Tamaki raise the ground and pad it with fluffy clouds, so when Tamaki falls from the sky where he is soaring, he will not be hurt by harsh reality. Kyouya protects Tamaki from the reality of cutthroat business deals and numbers and accounts, letting him dream and soar as he wishes. But...

Recently Tamaki seems to have found a tree branch to rest on. He no longer plummets into an ocean where Kyouya needs to buoy him - he has found a way to mesh his dreams with reality. Kyouya can only watch, cold running down his spine, as Tamaki takes the account books from his hands and pores over them, his suggestions becoming less fanciful and more practical.

Nowadays, Kyouya doesn't need to stay up late until five to manage the accounts anymore.

Tamaki flails and yells for 'okaa-san' to rescue him, and Kyouya chuckles, standing from his chair and walking over.

Is it such a terrible thing?

He always has the terrible habit of caging, Kyouya muses to himself as he extracts Tamaki from the twins' grasp with a few words. Even now, he is tying Tamaki to himself because of his own insecurities. Tamaki shouldn't - can't - be dependent on Kyouya to protect him forever, because there is graduation and the outside world is an even harsher place.

Perhaps it is time for him to turn the key and set Tamaki free.

But Kyouya thinks he'll hold him close for just a little longer.

End
