Yoruichi knew, from the moment she laid eyes on Urahara, that this was a man who needed a keeper.

She met him in her cat-form, prowling through one of Seireitei's many gardens when she saw him, kneeling down on the floor, staring at a flower like it could give him all he answers he needed.

Yoruichi had walked over, sitting down beside him and watched him watch the flower. The human part of her was curious why the cat part of her thought this man to be interesting, but, in her cat-form, the cat part of her reigned supreme, so she didn't speak.

Urahara stared at the flower for a long time, unmoving, his eyes never leaving the flower even when Yoruichi poked a paw at his leg.

The sun sets.

The flower closed it petals, one by one, slowly pulling them back into a bud. Yoruichi was bizarrely reminded of a fan those young, noble princesses (not her, though. Never her) used, so delicate and so useless. The flower closed and shrunk into itself, and its leaves, green with life just a moment before, folded themselves together until all Yoruichi could see was needles.

Urahara smiled. He looked as if he had found the answer to his questions. Yoruichi smiled too, because his joy was so evident and infectious, even though her cat-mouth ached from the strain; she wasn't used to smiling.

Urahara stood slowly, wobbling on his feet as straw-blond hair fell into his eyes. Yoruichi nearly laughed as she watched him, and he finally noticed her. He smiled again, bending down to tickle her behind her ears.

The action made him lose his balance, and he fell, arms flailing like a windmill. She could only watch him, half-horrified and half-amused, as he managed to land on his head and knock himself unconscious.

Such a silly boy.

But she couldn't help but be fascinated by him, because she had never known any boy who could sit so still just watching the flower and watiting for the sun to set. And so she turned back into human form, which was bigger, and barely managed to drag him home. His hair became a nest for branches and leaves and sand and the occasional small pebble, but Yoruichi didn't care; it wasn't her who had to wash his hair anyway.

They were seven at the time.
